Quick Relaxation Techniques: 15 Practical Stress Relief Tips
Quick relaxation techniques
An article about relaxation once suggested tying a piece of cellophane to your forehead to monitor your facial expressions. Yes, this might prevent frowning, but if you actually wore a cellophane bandage, you'd probably be the most composed clown in the office. Some books say that a short nap after lunch is the best way to relieve stress, which makes us wonder if these stress experts are actually working as hard as we are.
In real life, whether at work or at home, it's essential to have practical methods for managing stress. Here are fifteen practical stress-relief methods:
(a) Blowing air
Under prolonged work stress, deep breathing can often soothe impending emotional outbursts. Simply inhale through your nose, letting the air flow slowly down your abdomen and then to your ribs (imagine being inflated from a beach balloon into your internal organs, passing through your navel), and then slowly exhale through your nose (even slower than the inhalation), while softly saying "relax." Usually, just a few seconds of this exercise can leave you feeling refreshed.
(II) Rapid Liberation
In three minutes, you can try the following exercises to relax your muscles.
1. Close your eyes;
2. Inhale, hold your breath for about six seconds, and tighten your muscles as much as possible;
3. Exhale with a hissing sound to relax your body, then breathe rhythmically for twenty seconds;
4. Repeat twice. After the third release, relax for one minute and focus your mind on a peaceful state of mind.
(III) Sex
There's no need to force it. Sex is a great way to relieve stress, and many people are able to truly relax after having sex. It's also one of the healthy ways to relax both mind and body.
(iv) Smiling
Smiling can defuse tense situations. Studies have found that when a person smiles, it stimulates the brain to release endorphins, a natural pain reliever. When you encounter emergencies such as being late for work, your air conditioner breaking down, or being stuck in traffic, try smiling; it's guaranteed to be effective.
(V) A hot bath
A hot bath is one of the oldest sedatives. To relax, it's best to soak in water between 100 and 102 degrees Fahrenheit (in other words, you must be soaking in water slightly warmer than your body temperature) for no more than fifteen minutes. A lukewarm bath has the same effect.
(vi) Massage methods
If you have a massage device, try the following method: Don't let the water spray directly on your back. Instead, let the water glide and massage your head and shoulders. It will be more effective if mixed with warm water. Alternatively, let the water spray directly onto your feet to relieve pain.
(vii) Cool your mind
But don't use beer. Instead, try having a glass of water or fruit juice after get off work for ten minutes, preferably in a quiet place with your eyes closed. Explain to your roommate that you need some time to rest and relax before dealing with the overflowing toilet, overdue bills, and the fact that your child broke the neighbor's window while playing basketball.
(viii) Taking a walk
Avoid scheduling business appointments with lunch whenever possible. Use your lunch break to give your mind a rest and enjoy the buffer between the morning and afternoon workdays. Eat lunch alone and try to eat slowly and attentively. You might not have enough time for a nap, but you can take a walk. A ten-minute, relaxing walk can relieve your tension for up to two hours. Walking will make you feel more energetic. Another study found that a fifteen-minute walk has a greater calming effect than tranquilizers.
(ix) Talking to oneself
This doesn't mean you've gone crazy; in fact, it can help you avoid a path to destruction. Talking to yourself is a good way to manage stress. This method primarily gives you the opportunity to listen to, ask questions, and reflect on your own problems, thus preventing your perspective from becoming narrow.
In a survey of 208 adults, "talking to oneself" was one of the most common ways to comfort oneself.
(10) Do not panic excessively.
If you often say things like, "What a disaster!", you're probably over-panic. If necessary, imagine yourself in a flood; then you'll realize that a child spilling grape juice on the sofa isn't such a big deal.
(xi) Turn on the music and dance along.
Some experts say that relaxing music should be played slowly and quietly by instruments. But if you're tired of listening to Brahms' music, or feel like punching someone after listening to sad new-age music, then calming music has two characteristics: familiarity and preference. This means that any music that makes you happy is fine.
(xii) Participate in sports
Regular physical exercise is the most practical way to release stress. Forty minutes of exercise can reduce stress for up to three hours; the more stressed we are, the happier we will feel afterward.
(13) Do nothing.
It's certainly not easy for someone who's incredibly busy to suddenly put everything down, but everyone needs some free time. Psychologist Clive Manger says, "The city center is highly competitive. If you don't set aside time for yourself, you'll feel tense, irritable, and anxious, which will in turn affect others. So, to avoid being selfish, sometimes it's not too much to be a little selfish."
(XIV) This world is not perfect
In his book *Feeling Good*, Dr. David Byrne writes, "Admitting perfection is the biggest deception in the world, because it promises wealth while bringing suffering." In a study of over 700 people, Dr. Byrne found that perfectionists' demands for perfection ultimately brought them only frustration and dissatisfaction in their careers and personal lives. Even with relentless effort, perfectionists are not necessarily more successful than others. We must understand that 100% perfection is unattainable; achieving 90% is already quite successful. As the saying goes, "Life is full of disappointments." When dealing with stress, you must keep the spirit of compromise in mind. If you adhere to every principle but occasionally still feel trapped, that's okay; it's natural. Humans have evolved to the point where they can perform at their best under a certain level of pressure. Without this pressure, we might still be sleeping at our desks at 2 PM!
(XV) Consult experts
All ideas about stress relief emphasize using techniques to balance excessive stress, not eliminating stress altogether. If you can't control your stress, don't suffer alone; talk to your doctor. There are many medications that can help manage anxiety and prevent you from becoming a dull, unpleasant person.
